Faced with the Cemetery Guardian blocking you for the third time, the issue isn’t always the timing of your dodges. It’s often the weapon you’re carrying, poorly suited to your build or obtained too late. The best weapons in Bloodborne aren’t simply the most powerful on paper: they are the ones that match your stats, your combat style, and the type of enemy you’re facing.
Blood Gems and Lost or Uncanny Variants: the real damage lever
We spend hours searching for a rare weapon when the determining factor is the gem we insert into it. Each weapon has gem slots, and the Lost and Uncanny variants modify these slots, not the base damage. A Lost Cleaver does not have a better AR than a classic Cleaver, but its gem slots can accommodate more offensive combinations.
The Chalice dungeons allow you to obtain these variants for most of the base game weapons. However, for the DLC weapons from The Old Hunters, you must first possess the original weapon before its variant appears in the dungeons. Many players are unaware of this and search the Chalices in vain.
Specifically, before farming gems for hours, check what type of slot your variant offers. A triangular slot does not accept a circular gem, and a physical gem on a weapon converted to elemental is useless. We found the weapon guide in Bloodborne that details each precise location.

Arcane Scaling in Bloodborne: why your weapon isn’t doing the expected damage
A classic trap for Arcane builds: you see an “A” scaling in Arcane on a weapon’s stats and invest heavily in that stat. The result? The damage doesn’t increase. Arcane scaling only activates if the weapon actually inflicts Arcane damage.
A weapon that only deals physical damage, even with displayed Arcane scaling, gains no benefit unless converted. Conversion requires a fire, lightning, or pure Arcane gem. Once converted, the weapon loses its physical damage and fully switches to the chosen element.
This is what makes some weapons with low physical scaling formidable in an Arcane build: the Cleaver or Ludwig’s Hammer, once converted with a good fire gem, fully benefit from a high Arcane stat. Opinions vary on the exact profitability threshold, but aiming beyond the soft cap in Arcane remains the rule for this type of build.
Chikage and Bloodtinge: managing life drain in combat
The Chikage perfectly illustrates the “high reward, high risk” principle of Bloodborne. Its normal form strikes with Skill, in a classic and safe manner. Its transformed form, imbued with blood, switches to Bloodtinge and continuously drains your health points as long as it remains active.
In practice, you don’t stay in transformed form. The effective pattern is to transform the weapon for a short attack window (a combo of two or three hits), then immediately return to normal form. This back-and-forth requires practice, but it allows you to exploit the massive damage of Bloodtinge without emptying your health bar.
- Normal form: Skill damage, no drain, ideal for approach phases and standard enemies
- Transformed form: high Bloodtinge damage, constant drain, reserved for opportunity windows on bosses
- Quick transition: transform, hit two or three times, return, heal if necessary with a blood vial
This setup requires leveling Skill and Bloodtinge in parallel, which limits the versatility of the build. It’s a deliberate choice, not a compromise.

Holy Moonlight Sword: hybrid weapon from the DLC, not a pure Arcane weapon
The Holy Moonlight Sword attracts Arcane players due to its aura and luminous projectiles. However, it is not a pure Arcane weapon. Its normal form relies primarily on physical damage and scales mainly with Strength. Only the transformed form adds a significant Arcane component, with ranged attacks that consume mercury bullets.
To get the most out of it, you need to invest in both Strength and Arcane simultaneously. A “quality Arcane” build around this weapon requires more levels than a specialized build. The choice of gems also becomes more complex:
- Physical gems to enhance the normal form (close-range hits)
- “Nourishing” type gems that boost all types of damage simultaneously, ideal for exploiting both forms
- Pure Arcane gems if you only use the transformed form, which means ignoring half of the weapon’s potential
This sword is obtained in the DLC The Old Hunters during an optional boss fight. It is not accessible until a later stage in the game, meaning your build must already be hybrid-oriented if you plan to use it as your main weapon.
Choosing a weapon in Bloodborne is never just about a ranking of raw damage. Each weapon imposes a style, dedicated stats, and a coherent investment in gems. Testing both forms of a weapon before investing materials remains the most profitable reflex to avoid starting a build from scratch.
